Contrail

Contrail

A contrail is a vapor trail, which is something we see all the time in the sky, and take for granted. The one time in recent history when there were no contrails for almost two weeks was after 911.

All flight was grounded, even for private pilots like my husband. It felt very eerie for us, here in Eastern Washington and so far removed from the terrible tragedy, to look up into the sky and see no contrails. It was a constant reminder of the terrible thing that had happened.

Are you aware of contrails? Do you live in an area where they criss-cross the sky?

  1. I love seeing contrails in the sky, especially when there are a lot in one place.

  2. Hi, Catherine! Contrails are really cool. I see them once in a while, but not in our area. I often see them when we're on the road to somewhere else. :-)

  3. Hi Cathy! I remember that after 911. My pilot husband was the first to notice. Truly was an eerie sight at first. The sky was brilliant blue. I wonder if it was as noticeable in polluted cites like LA.

  4. I grew up two miles from an airport so planes were always descending over my house, plus we had a big air show in the summer and forget watching TV or talking on the phone when they were rehearsing. I also remember how eerie the post 911 days were when flights were grounded. That was such a surreal time in general.

  5. Six generations on your ranch – wow. That's really something. I've seen contrails in the sky before, but I never knew the name for them. Thanks.

  6. I remember how strange it was not to see contrails in the sky after 9/11. They were such a fact of life growing up that I never imagined how odd it would be not to see them on a daily basis.

  7. We see contrails where we live in Labrador. Goose Bay is an airforce base and an active commercial airport. There has been lots of controversy over the years because the low level flying has been an environmental concern as most of Labrador is a pristine wilderness. Thanks for coming by my blog! One of my blogs you might not have seen is www.sojournerinlabrador@blogspot.com. Come on by! I definitely want you as a pal,

  9. So that's what those streaks in the sky are called! Never knew that before :-) Glad I stopped in to learn this...

  10. Another new word I learned to day. I see them in the sky but didn't know they had a name, I never really thought about it, nor how eerie it would be if they just stopped.

  11. These are so fun to look at and if you get a chance to see
a plane leave them in the sky that is cool too!

  12. I never knew what those streaks were called! We live fairly close to an airport, so we see planes overhead frequently. My kids when they were little would say, "Look mommy, a rocket ship!" LOL.

It's nice to meet you Cathy! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm following you now too--great to meet a fellow romance writer (I'm all about the sweet romance!) Your ranch looks lovely by the way. I think my boys would have fun on your land for sure!

  13. We see them all the time since we are close to Toronto and Hamilton. It was eerie not seeing these in the sky-I remember that
